A major new version is coming!

We’re proud to announce that a major new version of Simplenote is just around the corner. It should be available in a matter of days. In the meantime, we’re temporarily absent from the App Store. We apologize for that. We encountered some unfortunate problems with a new App Store release process.

But the update is coming, and soon! We’re not revealing all the details until it’s live, but we’d like to at least prepare you for what to expect.

Simplenote has been growing fast. Over the months, we’ve received all kinds of great feedback. We processed this feedback, pondered it, prioritized it, and came up with 3 areas of focus for this version: reliability, organization, and sharing.

Importantly, we’ve also put a lot of effort into preserving or improving Simplenote’s speed and elegance. Our number one piece of feedback is consistently this: please keep it fast and simple. So we did.

For those of you who use 3rd-party Simplenote clients, you’ll need to wait a little while before new features start showing up there. 3rd-party developers will need some time to work with the new version.

We’ll let you know when the update is available, and we look forward to sharing all the details!

  1. Add-by-email is already a feature. I use it all the time.I love SimpleNote and it has revolutionized how I manage information, in both my personal life but even mores at work. The overview hints at it, but the addition of folders or some way of organizing content will be a plus.I am really excited!!

  2. The combination with notational velocity is awesome for me. I'm guessing by organization you're talking folders. I hate the idea, but as long as simplenote works with NV I'll be okay.

  3. I hope I hope there's support for Dropbox sync (as alternative, or instead of, Simplenote sync).Love the text editor and UI, but I prefer one place to store/sync my files in the cloud.

  4. for god's sake keep it simple and elegant.reliablity of syncing is paramount.if it doesn't sync one day it undermines the whole faith in it and i have to start using mac notes or whatever. yuck!love it the way it is.cheersmark.

  5. I hope you don't add clutter. Simplenote as it is, is fine. And please, please, no social sharing — I hate those icons everywhere.I'm afraid of those new features. I feel they'll take away simplicity.

  6. Will it have twitter integration, an in-app browser, facetime, facepaint and balloons? I hope not.Intrigued by what you'll do for "organization". That is the one area that I struggle with using SimpleNote. Thanks for being awesome Simple People!

  7. Here here. Keep all the Twitter Facebook nonsense out of it. Clean simple. Elegant. That should be your mantra. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Apart from improving reliability that is.

  8. Excited about sharing if that means that my wife and I can both have access to a shared grocery list. And I can see myself using folders if they were available. Beyond that, I think the app is perfect as is.

    Who is 'we'?

3rd-party developers will need some time to work with the new version.

Where can developers get advanced information on the above-mentioned new features?

  10. There's no integration with 3rd-party social services (Facebook, etc.) in this version. We focused on making our own services work better instead.Actually, our hope is that when you first use the iPhone/iPad app, you'll wonder what has changed. But as you use it, you'll discover some carefully added power and flexibility that is there if you want it, but doesn't get in the way.

  11. Does no integration with 3rd party apps mean no syncing with NV? If so please tell me now so I can move on 😦

  12. @Max: We're Simperium (see @simperium on Twitter, this post, and more info soon). We've been communicating with developers in a private forum. If you're developing something and you're not already signed up, you can request an invite here.

  13. @jack: Whoops, I clarified it. We meant services like Facebook. Yes, NV and all the other great apps will continue to work!

  14. Well I haven't used SN yet…came here this morning thanks to LifeHacker and found it doa. …So I won't be dazzled by the new stuff, but I look forward to using this:)

  15. Well some sort of way to keep a selection of notes in a group is very welcom in my books because it does get annoying having to search through hundreds of notes. And yes I do know there is a search function

  16. Sounds good… as long as there are no social features. Another of my favourite apps, xmarks, tries to introduce a new social feature with each release, and the customers make it backtrack every time. Simplenote does the job as it is. The UI could be improved (for example the web app would be better without paging) but otherwise it's good.

  17. Also you have a few bugs which could be fixed.Minor: Duplicates occasionally appear.Major: Notes occasionally disappear.

  18. To me the most important evolution is to remove the 'trash can' from the edit screen. Just putting away my iPod I more than once came close to deleting a note — forever!Thks for the work !

  19. I love the simplicity of simplenote but also feel that once I start collecting a large number of notes that having folders to organize them is going to be crucial. Otherwise: like it!

  20. Btw, did you fix the Caps-Lock that does not work, even when set in iOS preferences?!Emile

  21. You better match or surpass what Elements is doing. Their app looks simply amazing (especially with the Dropbox functionality). Keep it simple, yet powerful and you will keep your customers.

  22. Hopefully….. this is a minor upgrade. Folders would be nice, as would Bold and itallics…..but, the beauty of simple note is clean, simplicity. So I'd rather live without these features than have clutter on the interface. That said, I'm looking forward to to the new release.

  23. My current version of Simplenote isn't working with Textexpander – I'm really hoping that the next version will.

  24. This is a great app… Unfortunately I just upgraded my iPhone and now I can't redownload the app. Anxiously awaiting the application so I can access the data that I have already entered.

  25. Love your app, thanks for improving it and keeping it free! Please keep integration with ResophNotes.

  26. I actually submitted a few ideas myself. Although he said it would ruin the simplicity, I still would like to see the ability to edit .txt and .doc documents from it, along with text editing like fonts and color, and especially folders! I was also told to wait until the new version is released before buying, so I hope it comes out soon!

  27. Love the pin feature. Since I mostly access this app through JustNotes, I'll hope they incorporate this pin feature soon. I've yet to figure out the value of tagging since the first line of a note is usually enough for me to identify it. But perhaps I'll see the light soon. Someone let me know what I'm overlooking, please!

  28. Does this mean that the simplenote app will have tags and not folders? And will the tags sync with notational velocity? Because that would be awesome.

  29. Please add some kind of folders. For power users like me (160+ notes), some kind of organization is needed…

  30. @Gerry : if you really want bold or italic styles, juste use a SimpleNote client which supports the MarkDown syntax. That's what I love about SimpleNote : simplicity AND power

  31. First off, thanks for keeping it fast and simple and instantly updated across all my geek devices. That having been said, Simplenote would be elevated to a religious experience with folders added so that we could group related notes together. This seems inevitable, so the sooner the better. Also, in the current iPad version, one selected individual note is inexplicably given the whole screen while a pulldown-like menu of all our notes appears on the left hand side. But wait a minute, isn't this putting the cart before the horse? Most of us Simplenoters use it to create a LIST of notes, and we want to view this LIST when we open the thing, not one note that happened to be selected oh, like last night when I stumbled home from some bar. So it would seem preferable to reverse the current iPad format, you know, such that a scrollable list of all notes appears on the entire page – hogging the spotlight – instead of one meager note selected god-knows-when. Then from this list of notes, we select one to appear on the left side pulldown-like thingy. This would more closely mirror how Simplenote appears when using Just Notes, which I believe was created by God, or someone of comparable authority, and which instantly and always displays all notes in the list-like manner we adore. My 2 cents.

  32. Simplenote is now my official weapon of choice when it comes to writing. Can't wait for the new version! Thanks for all the hard work!

  33. Any word on when this will be available? My iPhone broke at just the wrong time, while your app is down, and my new iPhone has nothing to download. Therefore, I am out of commission until you get something downloadable. Can't you make the old version available while we wait for the new one?

  34. Thanks everyone for your feedback and your patience. We anticipate a release this week, the earlier the better.

  35. I can't even tell you how lame it is.I just found out that regular Notes synching w/ gmail is broken, broken, broken — I would've switched to this, but now I don't know — I'm not sure if it's worth copying everything twice. Hate to say but maybe you lost a customer.

  36. Got the new iPhone version and I'm interested in the tags cum folders but I can't figure out how to move a note from one 'folder' to another?

  37. Love the update. Love that you're using tags instead of folders. Amazing how users are stuck on old technology. Folders inevitable? Guess not :)Great job!

  38. Installed the new version on my iPad and paid the $4.99 to get rid of the ads. App still won't let me turn off the ads… Hope this is fixed soon!

  39. Fantastic update. The ability to pin and tag notes is pure genius.I also love the new icon. The blue is a lovely shade. The only thing I can't figure out is why not use that lovely blue for the button bars in the app, instead of that generic OS-defult grey/blue, to make Simplenote more visually distinctive?Overall, truly great stuff.
